ECFE Information

Welcome to ECFE!

Parents and their young children, aged birth to 5 years are invited to join Early Childhood Family Education classes this fall or winter/spring semester. The "ECFE News" describes classes, the Fall issue is mailed in August and the Winter/Spring issue is mailed in December. Contact ECFE at 763 682-8780 for availability of classes or for more information.

If you are new to the school district or are not receiving the "ECFE News" publication you may not be on the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school census. Please contact the school district census department at 763 682-8736.

Books for Newborns at Buffalo Hospital

Babies born at Buffalo Hospital Childbirth Center will be given a book and an information packet about ECFE.  An ECFE teacher visits the Buffalo Hospital Childbirth Center 2-3 times a week to share early childhood information and gives families a book to read with their newborn.  If you have a baby at the Buffalo Hospital, ask to receive your free book!

Home Visiting Program

ECFE Home Visits are designed to help children and families prepare for successful experiences in school through a variety of learning experiences.  This cost-free service is provided to residents of Buffalo Hanover Montrose schools who have birth to 5 year old child.  If you are interested in setting up home visits contact ECFE at 763 682-8780.

Child Care Home Visits

An ECFE teacher is available to visit your child care home one hour once a month and provide activities for your preschoolers.  It will include stories and a simple art activitiy.  These visits are geared for 2 1/2 to 5 year old children and include your involvement.  The ECFE teacher is also available as a reswource person for your concerns or issues with your day care children, when requested.  There is no fee. Community Services

Early Childhood Screening
Early Childhood Screening is now mandatory prior to enrollment in a public school. The purpose of screening is to identify early health or developmental needs. (It does not determine Kindergarten readiness.) This free screening is being done throughout the year by the school nurse and Early Childhood educators. You will be contacted for your appointment around your child’s 3rd birthday (if the school district has a record of your child’s date of birth). If you have questions regarding your child’s screening, please call 763 682-8779.

Programs for Young Children with Special Needs
If you notice a child who:
* Has trouble sucking a bottle as a newborn
* Cannot say the names of two people and toys by age 2
* Does not tell you about two things that happened to him/her by age 3
* Does not look at toys or people to try to reach for them
* Does not turn to face sounds and noises by 6 months
* Is unable to sit by age 1
* Is unable to walk by age 2
* Does not respond to his/her name by age 1
* Does not understand spoken conversation or directions
* Does not play with children when in a group by age 3
* Is not able to dress or undress her/himself by age 4 * Does not ask “wh” questions (who, what, where) by age 4
* Does not speak clearly by age 5
* Can’t draw simple shapes by age 5
* Cannot count 5-10 objects by age 5

He/she may be eligible for services provided by Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools and/or Wright County Human Services. Services can include home based instruction, pre-school classroom, speech therapy and/or consultation. Contact Early Intervention at 763 682-8784 or 1 800 286-6331.

Child Car Seat Checks
By appointment on the first & third Wednesdays each month Did you know that 80% of child safety seats in Minnesota are installed or used improperly? Wright County parents and individuals who work with children can make appointments to have their child seat checked by Wright County Public Health trained staff at the Public Health Office or WOW Van.
